A stalled vehicle does not always need the same response. The safest next step depends on the symptoms, location, traffic, access, and whether the vehicle can be driven safely.

Start with your surroundings

If the vehicle is in active traffic, anyone is injured, or there is fire or another immediate danger, call 911 first. Otherwise, move to a safer location only when it is safe to do so.

Describe the problem plainly

Tell dispatch what happened, what the vehicle does when you try to start or move it, and whether you see damage, warning lights, a flat tire, or another clear symptom.

Be ready for a towing recommendation

A tow may be safer when the vehicle cannot be resolved at the location, has visible damage, cannot roll or steer normally, or would be unsafe to drive.
